The San Elijo GU11 Nomads completed their inaugural regular season campaign with a 1-0 win over Carlsbad Lightning to secure 2nd Place in their AA-C Presidio League Division. A success, and total team effort on many levels! The Nomads took the lead with ten minutes left in their final regular season game, as Striker, and leading goal scorer Faith Fitzsimmons beat a Lightning defender outside the 18 yard box, and then proceed to bury a ball in the back left hand corner of the goal past the Lightning goal keeper.

With this win, the Nomads finished their season with a 9-1-4 record! The team will also look to make a run in the State Cup Tournament beginning at the end of January!

With this success, the team will be expanding it’s presence in San Elijo/San Marcos next year, and intend on fielding 2 competitive girls teams at the U11/U12 ages, and 2 competitive boys teams at the U9 and U10 age levels. The potential to field more teams at other age levels in the near future is a real possibility!

The Nomads will be holding Open Winter Soccer Sessions throughout December and January in partnership with The Academy at San Elijo. The sessions currently are age specific, and will be held on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at Hilltop field. 2nd/3rd grade boys 5-6, and 4th/5th grade girls from 6-7. The cost for these sessions are $10 per session or $60 for December (7 sessions) and $70 per session (8 sessions). They will also be holding tryouts in February. More details soon.

San Elijo Hills is preparing for its Annual Meeting of Neighborhoods and Board Member election.

Neighborhood District Meetings will be held on November 23 at 5:00 p.m. at Walters Management in order to open the ballots cast by individual residents.  Ballots must be RECEIVED prior to the closing of the polls at 5:00 p.m. Ballots submitted after the polls are closed will not be opened.  Homeowners who have not submitted ballots are encouraged to mail them immediately or bring them to the meeting on November 23.  The only business that will be conducted is the counting of ballots for individual neighborhoods.  The official election of directors will be held during the Annual Meeting of Neighborhoods, scheduled for December 8, 2009.

If the Inspector of Elections does not receive enough ballots from a neighborhood to constitute a quorum, the Neighborhood District Meeting will reconvene on a later date.  If this date is determined and announced on November 23, and no additional notice will be sent to the Membership.

The Annual Meeting is scheduled for December 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the San Elijo Elementary School.  During this time, the Neighborhood Representatives will be asked to cast the votes of their respective neighborhoods for the election of Board members.  They will cast an official ballot for the Neighborhood that includes the votes of the neighborhood exactly as they were cast.  Attention Neighborhood Reps and Alternates: If you are not present at the Annual Meeting, the votes from your neighborhood will not be counted.  It is very important that you attend.

The San Elijo Academy in partnership with San Elijo Nomads will be holding Winter Soccer Sessions at Hilltop Field on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s throughout December and January for specific age groups. The California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) is pleased to offer some recommendations to help you maximize the efficiency of this water saving device and to help keep your landscape beautiful. Program it Correctly. In order to maximize and maintain water efficiency, the smart controller needs to be programmed correctly.  These mini computers need in depth information about soil, plants, exposure, type of irrigation etc. because they are customized for your property.  Like any computer, if it receives inaccurate information, it will not achieve the desired results, possibly resulting in over or under irrigated areas and damaged plants or hardscapes. Monitor Your Site. Site conditions must be monitored, especially the first few weeks after installing your controller to fine tune and adjust your controller settings.  Look for run off, poor plant heath, color changes and/or any other signs that settings might need to be modified.  Several adjustments may be needed. Water Mandates and Restrictions. If you are limited to day of the week watering restrictions, your smart controller may not be allowed to function correctly.  CLCA recommends to either use the smart controller or follow the allocated watering days, not both. If only allowed to water one or two days a week, it defeats the purpose of watering based on sensors and weather information. Smart controllers and good water management are often more effective at reducing landscape water usage than assigned watering days because most people soak their lawns during their allocated time, actually using more water than the site actually needs. Some cities and water districts are now allowing those with smart controllers to be exempt from limited day watering restrictions.  Be sure to check with your local water district regarding restriction exceptions. Regular Maintenance of Current Irrigation System. It is important to regularly inspect your irrigation system and repair leaks and/or other problems. Since these controllers consistently adjust your watering, if there is a leak or other problem with the irrigation system, even if programmed correctly, your landscape may not receive the correct amount of water that it needs. Learning to read your water meter will help you determine if you have a leak

Installing New Landscape. If new landscape is being installed, group plants into similar areas based on water needs.  These areas, called hydrozones will help your plants receive the proper amount of water to meet their needs and help to maximize the efficiency of your controller because all the plants have the same water usage requirements.  When selecting an irrigation system for your new landscape, take time to learn about the most efficient irrigation devices and about the water requirements of the plants being installed. Also consider including drought tolerant plants in your landscape design. A well-planned landscape incorporating advanced irrigation technology, drought resistant plants and a smart controller will see the most water savings. Smart controllers are an excellent tool to help reduce landscape water usage.  When used and programmed properly, a smart controller can help you achieve substantial water savings.

The Annual San Elijo Hills Tree Lighting will be held on Friday, December 4th from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm in the San Elijo Hills Town Square.  Hot cider coffee and cookies will be served. At 7:45 the the San Elijo Hills tree will be lit. Event will go on, rain or shine.

This year, San Elijo Hills will support Toys for Tots. The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Donations are accepted at SEH Visitor Center, starting November 9th, between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. You may also bring a toy to the event San Elijo Hills  Tree Lighting.

A San Marcos philosophy professor and several supporters are hoping to open a nondenominational liberal arts college in the upscale San Elijo Hills community in fall 2010.

If San Elijo College succeeds, it will join a growing list of facilities that have helped turn San Marcos into a major education center. San Elijo College founder Tim Mosteller said last week that the campus will be a classical liberal arts institution modeled after so-called “great books” schools in other parts of the country.

Examples include Gutenberg College in Eugene, Ore.; St. John's College in Indianapolis, Ind., and Santa Fe, N.M.; and New St. Andrews College in Moscow, Idaho.

The new school will fill a void in the county, he said.”In North County, especially, there aren't any really traditional sort of liberal arts colleges,” Mosteller said. The school cannot start the multiyear process of seeking accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges until after it has opened.

However, the college has registered with the state as a nonprofit corporation and recently received its nonprofit status from the Internal Revenue Service. Mosteller and the board are now recruiting students, as well. “We need at least 12 students, with a maximum of 35,” he said, referring to the fall 2010 session. “We hope to end up with about 150 total (in five or six years).” City officials declined to comment on the new college.
